Avete mai sentito parlare del Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

Have you ever heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? It is a huge amount of garbage in the Pacific Ocean that can be almost considered as an island on its own. Scientists have recently discovered that it is 16 times larger than they previously thought : it’s three times as large as the size of France. Its existence has been known for the past 30 years but in the last few years it has been growing and becoming dramatically worse; it’s starting to become a problem for the environment. This Trash Vortex is between California’s coast and Hawaii and it covers 1.6 million squared km.

There are approximately 79 thousand tons of plastic in the area and is so large that it is very similar to an island, the average density is just 10 kg per squared km in the center. There are 1800 billion pieces of plastic which corresponds to 250 pieces for each human being. And if we think that it is just in the Pacific ocean, we’re wrong; there are similar patches in every sea. Even though they are smaller they are no less polluting; there is one also in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

These garbage patches have a very widespread and grave effect on the environment because the fish and the plankton eat the smaller pieces of plastic and so the garbage contaminates our food chain; humans suffer because of this as well. This has an impact on the flora and fauna too; lot of sea birds and big fish have been found dead with their stomach full of plastic pieces. An example of this is a big sperm whale that was found dead on the coast of Spain due to the large amount of plastic in its stomach. The plastic in the oceans is dangerous also because of the degradation of the plastic into microscopic pieces that can’t be caught by nets.

Given that every year we dump 8 tons of plastic in the ocean, Ocean Cleanup, a non-Governmental Organization, is trying to remove some plastic but it isn’t enough to reduce the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. UN has decided to support projects that will clean a part of the patch and reduce the amount of plastic that is disposed of in the oceans.

If we don’t take action now, in the near year of 2050 there will be more plastic pieces than fish in our seas.
